Frequently Asked
Questions: Commands
3.0 What Are All Of The
Commands On REDEMPTION?
The following list of commands can be viewed
by typing "help commands":
AREAS COMMANDS REPORT SCORE TIME COUNT WORTH
OLDSCORE
Syntax: areas
Syntax: commands
Syntax: oldscore
Syntax: report
Syntax: score
Syntax: time
Syntax: weather
Syntax: worth
Syntax: count
AREAS shows you a list of areas in the
game.
COMMANDS provides you a full list of all
commands available to you -- we recommend that, if possible you save and
print this for constant reference.
REPORT shows your current statistics to you
and also announces them to other players in the room.
SCORE shows much more detailed statistics to
you only. OLDSCORE displays many of the same statistics as SCORE does,
but in a different format.
TIME shows the game time, as well as the time
the mud was last started, and the current local time for the host
computer.
WEATHER shows the current game weather.
WORTH displays your current holdings, your
current experience gained, and your experience needed until your next level.
COUNT shows you the amount of people online,
the max there was online today, and the record of the total number of
players online at the same time EVER.
3.1 What About Socials?
There is also an extensive library of
"socials" available for "creating" actions of a social
nature (poking, smiling, laughing, etc.). The complete list can be obtained
by typing "socials". You're on your own to experiment with the
effects of each (there are no help files for socials).
3.2 What About The Help
Files?
Typing "help" will yield a list of
primary help files:

3.3 That's It?
Yep, more or less. Help files also exist for
most individual commands and aspects of REDEMPTION. We encourage you to
review these individually. Some of the help files will refer you to other
information that may not be listed here, so read them carefully.
3.4 Hey! What The . .
.? Answers To Common Minor Questions And "Problems".
In the material that follows, we try to
provide answers to questions that arise frequently on REDEMPTION. These
apply more or less to all levels of players.
3.4.1 Damn! I Wandered In
On A Huge Aggie And Died! How Am I Going To Get My Corpse Back?
Ouch! Well, shit happens . . .. Remember to
use that "consider" command often! What you are in need of is
referred to as a "corpse retrieval", or CR.
Note that certain Clans will do CRs for free,
or for a fee. If you have no luck getting assistance from the general
populace, identify a member of one of these clans and contact them directly.
You may have more luck. (Use "help clan" for more information, and
see clan information part of this site.)
Remember, though, that no one has an
OBLIGATION to help you get your corpse. Sometimes you just have to write it
off for lack of help, or lack of anyone that can help. Such is life.
Consider it a chance to clean out your inventory and find some new toys.
Also remember, after a successful retrieval,
to dispose of your old corpse after you have removed your gear from it . .
..
3.4.2 Why Won't The
Shopkeeper Sell Me X?
The shopkeepers sell from the top of their
inventory. Thus, suppose you want to buy an elven long sword (level 7). When
you type "list" to see the shopkeeper's inventory, you see that
there are a level 11 and a level 27 sword above the elven longsword. To
purchase the elven longsword, type "buy 3.sword".
The same principle works for all shopkeepers,
as well as items in your inventory, the pit, and most other
"lists".
3.4.3 Hey, My Backpack
Is Empty!
No, it probably isn't. Are you holding two
backpacks? Same principle as above works for looking into items. Try
"look in 2.backpack" or "get {item} 2.backpack".
Also note that this could be the cause of
other problems. For instance, if you are wearing a "signet ring"
and you try to "look sign", it will tell you about your ring (the
machine checks you first, then your surroundings). Thus, try "read
2.sign". Got it?
3.4.4 How Do I Buy 10
Breads At Once?
You can use the * to make multiple purchases.
Thus, "buy 10*bread" will get the baker to sell you ten breads in
one transaction. The command "put all.bread backpack" would, then,
put all of the breads you are holding into your backpack. This also works
for other items.
3.4.5 I Can't Get My
Spells To Work . . .. What's Up?
There are three things to check here. First,
is the spell practiced? If you get a message that says "You lost your
concentration", your ability simply isn't high enough (though repeated
tries may work).
Second, if you get a message that tells you
that you know no such spell, you are probably not typing the name of the
spell correctly. Use the "spell" command to see all of your spells
by name. Also, remember that the name of the spell MUST be in ' ' in most
cases.
Third, if you continuously cast the wrong
spell, you may have more than one spell by the same name. Thus, if you want
to cast "cure serious" and just type "cast 'cure' ", you
will likely get "cure light" since it is the lower level spell.
Typing out the full name of the spell will solve the problem. (You may want
to create an alias for longer spells to avoid re-typing--see "help
alias".)
3.4.6 Why Can't I Use This
Staff/Wand/Scroll/Potion?
Well, as above, you have to practice your
ability first . . ..
If it is practiced, and you are of high
enough level to use it, you still have to use the equipment correctly. The
commands for each follow:
Staves: brandish
Potions: quaff
Scrolls: recite
Wands: zap
BRANDISH brandishes a magical staff. QUAFF
quaffs a magical potion (as opposed to DRINK, which drinks mundane liquids).
RECITE recites a magical scroll; the is optional, depending on the nature of
the scroll. ZAP zaps a magical wand at a target. If the target is not
specified, and you are fighting someone, then that character is used for a
target.
You must HOLD a wand or a staff before using
BRANDISH or ZAP.
Also, keep in mind that all of these commands
use up their objects. Potions and scrolls have a single charge. Wands and
staves have multiple charges. When a magical object has no more charges, it
will be consumed.
And finally, some items or spells require
more than one item to be successful. They are rare, but if you get a message
to that effect, you have to search a little more.
See the help files for each command or item
for more.
3.4.7 Hey! I Can't
Recall! Why?
Recall does not work in two instances. If you
are cursed, you can not recall until your curse wears off or is removed.
Type "affects" and see if you are cursed.
Second, certain areas are
"no-recall" areas, or voids. They are easy to get lost in. To get
out, wander around, and after each move type "exits". This will
show you where the various exits go. Eventually, one of the exits will lead
you out.
3.4.8 Why Did It Just Say
"Bosco Protects You"?
Every time a spell is cast in Terra, there is
a chance it will work, but not take effect. When this happens to you, Bosco
has protected you. Feel lucky. Similarly, Bosco can abandon you on occasion.
3.4.9 Hey! Why Am I
Shivering And Suffering?
You, or your food supply, got poisoned in
battle. You must find someone to cure your poison.
The Healer at the pit can do this. Again, if
you're under level 10, he'll eventually do it for free. Otherwise, you must
pay.
As long as you are poisoned, you will shiver
and suffer at each tick. If you are sleeping or resting, this will wake you
up and you must go back to sleep. You will slowly lose HP at each tick while
you are poisoned until you either die or are cured.
You might also want to check and see if your
food or water supply was the source of your poison--if it was, you will get
poisoned again the next time you eat or drink. You'll have to destroy and
replace your contaminated supplies.
3.4.10 And I'm Plagued!
Help!
Plague is similar to poison, but the affects
are worse. Again, you must get it cured or you will continue to slowly lose
HP until you eventually die.
PLEASE NOTE: If you are plagued and can not
afford a cure, please ask someone to cure you or lend you money via gossip.
Plague is highly contagious. If you sit around the pit, you will infect
other players and mobs, and plague will run rampant in Terra. This will not
make you a popular person.
If you wish to try waiting out the plague, do
it somewhere unpopulated. It is also customary to announce to others, via
gossip, if you intend to bring plague to the pit for a cure, and to give
others time to get out.
3.4.11 Why Can't I Carry
X?
Well, it's either too heavy, or you have to
many items. Drop something and try again.
Note that some spells, such as curse and
weaken, lower your STR, and thus your ability to carry lots of weight. You
will continue to carry what you had at the time you were affected, but if
you remove an item, you won't be able to put it back or replace it until the
spell has been cancelled.
The same thing might happen if a "giant
strength" spell wears off, or if you remove some +STR armor items.
Thus, when you can't carry something, check
your spell affects and stats. 99.9% of the time the cause will be found
here--especially if the change occurs right after battle.
If you are carrying more than your max
weight, you'll soon discover that your movement is negatively affected by
it.
3.4.12 Why Isn't Item
Or Mob X Re-popping?
Certain items on REDEMPTION, especially
low-level stat enhancing items and high-level unique items, have a load
limit. This means, basically, that if X number of them exist in the MUD at
the time the area to which the item belongs re-generates, the item will not
re-generate (X varies by item). It will re-pop again when the total number
falls below X. Be patient and try again.
Also, items and mobs on REDEMPTION will
re-pop faster if no one is in the area at the time the system checks the
item and mob presence. Thus, if you sleep in an area, it will take MUCH
longer for it to re-pop that if it is empty. If there is always someone in
the area, it will re-pop slower.
3.4.13 How Do I Group?
Grouping allows you to combine your efforts
with other characters and fight mobs together. Type "help group"
for details.
Note that grouping, among other things,
divides the XP and money received for each kill between players. You should
read the group help files carefully to understand fully how this works.
3.4.14 Does My Pet Steal
XP?
Yep. If you choose to keep a pet, the pet
acts as a member of your group, and most of the grouping rules apply.
3.4.15 How Do I Get My Pet
To Stop Following Me?
Type "nofollow" and you pet will
stop following you. If you decide to get rid of a pet, please kill it after
you make it stop following you. The IMMs frown upon letting strays wander
around.
3.4.16 Bards? Kewl, How Do
They Work?
Bards will sing songs for you in a single
room, or over the MUSIC channel to everyone (for a price). If you wish to
hear a song, type exam bard when in the same room with him. For more
information see, "help bard" and the instructions will be
provided.
3.4.17 Hey, Where Is My
Class Guild?
There are no class guilds on REDEMPTION.
Everyone trains and practices at the Temple of Concentration in Midgaard.
3.4.18 Hey, Wouldn't It Be
Cool If . . .?
Maybe, maybe not. If you have an idea or
suggestion for the MUD, please use the "idea" board service which
is provided (see "help note"). Don't use the general board for
these, and refrain from explaining them to everyone on the public
communications channels.
Ideas posted properly will be reviewed
regularly by the IMPs.
3.4.19 What If I Find A Bug?
If you find a bug report it immediately. It
is best to post a note to the IMPs on the bug board.
NOTE: Once you find a bug, it is a violation
of the rules to exploit it. Thus, should something go wrong, and a
shopkeeper, for instance, gives you too much money for an item, you will be
deleted for taking advantage of the bug before it is fixed.
3.4.20 What Is The Policy
On Others Using My Character?
It is illegal for you share your character
with ANYONE. Keep your password to yourself, too.
You will be held responsible for ANYONE who
uses your character, and will suffer any penalties they may incur. IMMs will
not listen to stories about significant others, angry roommates and others
messing with or messing up your character. If you don't want this to happen,
don't share your password.
3.4.21 Damn, My Character
Is Gone!
This happens only in very rare instances, but
it has happened.
Please keep two points in mind in such an
instance. First, because REDEMPTION runs on someone else's system, there is
a certain lack of physical control on behalf of the IMPs. They can't keep
people from tripping over powers cords, moving material from disk to disk,
or crashing the entire site. These things happen. They often happen, as
well, at the worst possible time as far as backups are concerned. Thus, the
IMPs can't *always* make everything perfect. They'll get you as close as
they can, and from there you are on your own.
Second, IMMs can only make reimbursements for
matters they can verify. Thus, if you do at some point require one, the last
back-up may show you several levels back from where you claim to be, and the
IMMs will have to go with what they can verify. Similarly, if equipment is
lost, the IMMs can't be running around trying to determine everything you
carried--the potential for abuse under such a policy is immense. Under such
circumstances you will get some basic eq, and *possibly* an item of your
choice, but you're on your own to replace your favorite objects.
Now, with this in mind:
Things happen, on occasion, to player files,
and the IMPs will do their best to correct such problems. PLEASE note the
following guidelines:
A. If you log in and type your player name
correctly, and still get a message that says "Is this a new
player", type "NO" and quit immediately. If you create a new
character with the same name, your old player file will be overwritten and
there will be little the IMPs can do to help you. Start a new character, log
in, and write a note to 'immortal' explaining the problem (and, for God's
sake, let him know your original character's name). Keep your new player, as
the IMM's may need to respond to you that way. Wait two to three days,
checking your notes regularly, and the problem should be fixed in that time.
B. If you log in and your character has
changed substantially (like going from level 40 to level 1), log out
immediately and follow the same steps listed above.
C. If you are simply missing your favorite
item, or perhaps some cash, it is probably not due to the machine--you lost
it, it was destroyed in battle, or someone stole it. There will be no
reimbursements in such instances.
D. If the problem affects a large number of
characters, the IMPS may adopt special procedures when re-imburses will be
done. This is very, very rare, but it happens. In such instances, a note
will be posted explaining special reimbursement procedures. This may include
limitations on re-imburses, special hours for re-imburses, etc. If getting
your stuff back is that important, follow the instructions carefully.
And ALWAYS remember. Reimbursements are an
exception, not the norm. Don't bother the IMMs with simple lost or stolen
items--just go get another. If there is a major problem, what the IMPs
decide to do about it is at their discretion. If they make a policy, it is
done weighing a lot of competing interests, and it is final. Matters
concerning reimbursements are not open to negotiation.
3.4.22 How Do I Make
REDEMPTION Work In Color?
Type "color" to toggle ANSI color
on and off. This will provide you with set colors. To customize your colors
or put color in your title see "help color."
3.5 Am I Gonna Face This
Much Sarcasm All The Time At REDEMPTION?
No, not really. For the most part the IMMs at
REDEMPTION are a bunch of kittens. Sometimes they're maybe even a little too
playful, and other times rubbing their fur the wrong way is a really bad
idea. Most of the time, though, they're quietly sitting on top of the
bookshelf checking out the scene.
However, this raises one last final topic--a
topic of two parts. The first, of course, is the playful use of sarcasm to
confuse newbies with potentially disastrous results. A common example would
be encouraging people to stop by the guardian of the Temple (Tetragon) and
type "hi Tetragon". Sounds innocent enough, eh? That is, of
course, until you find out that "hi" translates to
"hit", and Tetragon doesn't take well to being hit.
The lesson for newbies, of course, is to
think carefully about advice you get from strangers. Most people will be
honestly helpful, but you never know when even the most docile player needs
a good chuckle. Until you get to know a few people, use your head . . .. If
you want to communicate with Tetragon, you would have to type "say 'hi
tetragon'" anyway. Be equally careful of commands like: kiss/kill,
slug/slay, etc. In most cases, typing out the full commands will avoid
problems.
And the suggestion for the upper-level
players is to have fun, but go easy on the newbies. You were one once, too .
. .. Not every character is expected to develop a role that includes running
to help at every newbie's beckon and call, but even if your character is
supposed to be mean, giving bad advice to newbies goes a little far.
3.6 I Really Like This MUD.
Who Pays For It?
Starcrossed and Cauthon do, out of their own
pockets. They bring you the game free of charge and is ultimately
responsible for it.
